selective startup and win 2k

i had downloaded some msconfig utility for win2k long time ago and now i was finally looking at it, and noticed that i have the selective startup option marked....
under that the following are checked
process system.ini files
process win.ini file
load system services

my question was --- will unchecking any of the above three give me any trouble?

You absolutely have to have the system services. It's not a good idea to disable processing of win.ini and system.ini either.

I swear this MSCONFIG for Win2k is a dangerous toy.
I have seen so many people download it, not realize that it isnt "JUST LIKE WIN98's MSCONFIG" and then go turning stuff off in startup.
Next thing you know their PC doesnt boot or its all buggy.

Here is a tip for you if you are savvy and feel comfortable with the registry.

Open Regedit
Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

See whats in this key...probably mobsync, ctfmon if you use OfficeXP and some others..
These keys are whats loading when you start youre pc....but be careful what you delete.

Frankly shutting of services in 2k doesnt really buy you squat for resources in most cases.
Shut off MEssenger, see if some of your software doesnt work, turn of logical disk manger, see if you can change your drive letters.
Leave this stuff alone, it isnt worth the hassle to get back 1 meg of memory...buy some ram instead..its safer. 🙂

i guess i better leave that stuff alone then....
only thing i use that msconfig for is everytime i need to use real player, it loads up on startup, so that's the only time when i go to msconfig and uncheck real player...
but definetely, wouldn't want to be able to not boot up this machine...
thanks\
