Trying to help my dad find out his selective service registration # (to apply for full citizenship). When he got his green card back in ~'76, he should've been assigned one (unless he's mistaken). We have no idea where to begin to look for this. I called the county clerk office and they can't give any info over the phone so we'll make the trip down there if we have to. Should I be trying the state senator's office ? I was told by someone along the way these are handled by state.

Anyone have any details on how this is handled or its records kept ?

theres a phone number you can call which will give you your selective service #. check their website. i had to get the number when I applied for an internship with the NSA. I was freaking out since I had no idea I even had a number after I registered....but I called and there is an automated system where you give some info and it'll give you your number.

Try calling 1-847-688-6888.

That's the number that's listed on the back of my Selective Service Registration Acknowledgment for any questions you might have.

gotta do it by phone since he was born before 1960.

EDIT>>> I think I've been here before (started this search months ago)... and we submitted a formal written request and haven't gotten anything back yet (8+ weeks). Just haven't tried this phne number yet... I don't think...

Yeah, I had to know my number, back in 95, when I was looking to go back to school full time, and was doing college admissions paperwork. They all wanted to know it.....

Well, shoot! I'm prior military, and never registered for the draft (they started the registration back up when I was in.....yeah, I'm old!! ). So I called the local SSS office, and lo and behold.....I had a number! Seems someone in the federal government got smart (it happens.....infrequently, but occasionally), and had a number assigned to anyone who was active duty, guard or reserve when the registration period started.

They never told us, but I sure was glad they'd done it! :D

wtf... after a long hold time... I was able to select menu options to initiate a records search on people born before 1960... then "representatives are unable to take your call, please try again the next business day". They don't close for another hour. :|

I'm young :( (and coincidentally, the only person in the entire thread that really falls within the selective service program, a conventional WW3 withstanding)

In just over the year I won't be eligible for the draft...woohoo!
