I just got a new Dell Inspiron 4100 notebook that came with the 6 disk MS Works.

It came with WinME (yech! . . . now I know why M$ created it - so that dissatisfied users would be ready for XP).
Anyway, that abortion is gone and Win2K Pro installed properly.

Anyway . . . how is M$ Works? is it worth installing? Can just Word 2000 be installed or SELECTED components (or am I stuck with the whole thing)?

I have Office 97 and I'd like to run it with Word 2000. Any sugestions? Help?!

I can't believe no one has ANY comments about MS Works!?!

I notice a few snide undercurrents about it in threads in general . . . however, with Office 97 installed on my computer is there any NEED for the complete works.

All I would LIKE to install is Word 2000, Encarta and maybe the Streets & Trips.

It is even possible to selectively install? Or am I stuck with the whole package? And how good or bad is it?

Apoppin,

The installer for works suite will let you pick and choose what apps you want.

No need for Works with office. All works is, is a single program that has scaled-down versions of Word/Excel/Access included.

Nobody ever uses it because everybody always has to use Word/Excel/Access at work or school, so they can't bring that stuff home and load it into Works....kinda makes it nearly useless for most people. If you are only doing your own stuff to print out, it's fine.

I personally never need the advanced features the office apps add over works, but it's just easier to use what everybody else has...

Thanks again!

I'm back from work and you saved me from installing it all. The Encyclopedia seems nice and I can use Word 2000 (I didn't install Word from Office 97) and it seems like Streets and tips could be useful on a laptop. I use Quicken so Money is useless . . . Publish It pales compared with FrontPage2000 and I have enough clipart.

Even though I got it free with my Dell, I don't need useless duplication.

Well, I just installed it . . . with the Dell version, you are stuck with Works . . . there was no way around it but to install it. At least I didn't have to install Money and Publish It.
