Selection box in Internet Explorer gone!

I just did a full clean reinstall and hardware upgrade....

I use a web based list all day and before whenever I clicked on the links it would put a translucent box around them so when I came back to the main listings I could see the last message I viewed.

Now the box is gone...it will work for the first click and then no longer come up again.

Anyone have any ideas? My relevant hardware is Via 694T motherboard, Radeon 8500 w/ Cat 3.2 drivers, and XP Pro.

I tried setting the Enable Translucent Selection Box in Advanced Properties and it doesn't work.
