Selecting Multiple Icons on the Desktop

I know this worked right a few versions ago, but it has been intolerable since.

In Win7, if you select an icon on the desktop, hold down shift, and select another icon, it selects all icons between them in a left to right, top to bottom order. However, whenever icons are sorted, it's top to bottom, left to right.

I don't know if it's just me, but this is quite possibly the most counterproductive "feature" ever. Who would actually have a set of icons that they would want to select that happens to line up in such a manner?

Anyone know how to fix this.

Thanks in advance.

Hold down the CTRL to select multiple individual Icons.

Holding Shift tells Windows to select the first item you clicked, the last item you clicked, and everything in between.

Holding CTRL tells Windows to select each individual item that you click, and only the items that you click.

This is standard practice in Windows and has the same effect when selecting files and folders in Windows Explorer.

I tried the Shift-Click selection on Server 2003 (same as XP). It seems like it's always been this way. Windows "Auto-Arrange" will stack the icons vertically first, but the Shift-Click selection goes horizontally first.

I still think it's annoying that you can only use shift + click once, and that you have to do it first, as it will cause anything and everything else that was selected to be unselected.
