So... if the parents are care givers from another venue it seems reasonable that they are employees of some entity and perhaps self employed and should have the option to elect joining the union applicable.

Many states are not right to work states. If your shop goes union you must either join the union or be fired. Since government jobs are unionized, you are forced to join them if you are classified as a government worker.

Unions are not about fair, they are about power.

EDIT: All unions would have to do to gain the support of most people would be to police their own. If an employee is worthy of being fired, they should not protect that employee. We all know of union employees who should be fired and yet cannot be fired.

This. I work in the construction side which is a bit more self-policing, unfortunately the slugs don't usually get fired for cause, just laid off and back to the hall, but at least they don't work much. Unfortunately it seems like for many people it's just "THE UNION" like there is one union out there, and it is of course the UAW/teachers who seem to represent that one in the hearts and minds of many.

Working in Detroit, you hear and see some horror stories about both of those unions. Some guys in our field who escaped from the UAW because of that exact sort of thing. Unions need to be dumping those who aren't worthy of the protection, they are meant to be defended against unethical managers or the like, not because they can't show up on time, drink/do drugs on the job, won't work, etc.

Government workers should not even be allowed to unionize. Their pay is decided democratically in the first place so what's the purpose? Not only that, govt workers can put undue leverage on politicians private workers can't by manning phone banks and televised electioneering for their bosses. In many cases govt workers play a significant role on choosing their bosses and thus their pay unlike private industry.

Obviously I feel the same about those receiving govt benefits.

Surprisingly the Federal Govt is smart enough not to allow union workforce. To bad cities & states arnt that smart. It will break them. Look up almeda Ca. Where they spend 75% of budget just on retirment and can't even hire cops.

I'm in two minds regarding unions...
On the one hand, while I was in grad skule I carried the mail and was a shop steward... I spent alot of time trying to sort out the reasonableness of the PO's manager's demands vs the Carriers vis a vis the Contract but always trying to create parameters for what is reasonable... And, on the other hand, I can see the history of employer vs the worker... and when jobs are scarce they, the employers, can have their sway but for some kind of intervention on behalf of the worker...

I guess the easiest way to sort it all out is for the citizen in general to give up the self benefit of a job to simply not work and when enough folks don't staff WalMart or don't shop there stuff will change.

It is the employee who makes the profit for the enterprise and probably the cause for China, et seq doing the work American companies need being done.
