Sega is developing an official Genesis emulator for the iPhone and is planning on using the new in-app purchasing scheme to the platform it's own virtual console. It comes with Space Harrier II and so far they're making four games available.

• Sonic the Hedgehog: $5.99
• Golden Axe: $4.99
• Ecco the Dolphin: $2.99
• Shining Force: $2.99

The app is being dubbed the Ultimate Genesis Collection. It's expected to launch sometime next month.

I like the idea and the nostalgia of it, but $2.99-$5.99 a game. That is too much. The games are near 20 years old.

How is this any different then someone releasing a JVM for the iphone to run java applets? (Which is against their TOS)

Bad ass, but I agree; $2.99+ for games that old is a bit much. Ill just wait for a cracked Sega emulator to pop up in the jailbroken app store.

It's a wasted effort. iPhone is not developed to be for gaming purposes. It's lacking many functions other modern consoles are capable of.

whats funny is that i can find a disc full of old classic sega games for ps3/360 for $20 or less. i mean, seriously...price them lower and maybe it will be worth buying.

on another note, i read that final fantasy 1 and 2 are coming to the iphone. hopefully they will be priced at $5 or less...but i doubt it.

You are comparing a cell phone to a modern gaming console...are you kidding?

I think I remember reading somewhere that the iphone has the same processing power, if not more as a PSP or DS, I could be wrong though.

Apple is trying to steer the iphone/touch into the portable gaming device direction and tons of developers are making games for it. Doesnt look like a wasted effort to me...

sounds cool...but how they handle controls is really important.

That is what's holding me back from buying this. Since the iPhone has no buttons, how they develope the controlls to work with a touch screen is very important and if it's not done right it ruins the game. One example would be duke nukem 3d; those controlls are horrible and for makes the game unplayable.

Fail! I have about 50 games on my iPhone and I looooooove it for quick gaming when I'm out somewhere. I gave my PSP away because it bored me to death. There are some awesome games in the app store, and they're only getting better. While it does lack capabilities, it also offers some that none of the others do. I definitely like it more than a PSP and even a DS. You claim it's a wasted effort but Apple's making a shitton of money from people buying games. And I doubt Epic would be porting the Unreal engine to the iPhone if it was a wasted effort.

different strokes for different folks I guess...
