Okay people - I just got off of the phone with Sega's sales line. They told me that NO - they are not going to be selling the Sega broadband adapter. It will not be available in the US at all from anyone - including the Sega.com store until May.

I have heard from various sources that the Japanese version of the broadband adapter does indeed work on the US DC, but I cannot confirm this as I have yet to see it with my own eyes. Maybe someone on this site can provide some enlightenment concerning this.

I have seen the Japanese version available on this site. But, it is pretty expensive, but worth it if you don't want to wait.

they're probably doing this so we don't prematurely use the dc as web servers on fast networks

Many gamers have been looking forward to Sega's Broadband Adapter, and with good reason; modems are so... 1997. The Broadband Adapter will put some zip in the Dreamcast's online capabilities, drastically lowering multiplayer ping times for smoother and more responsive gameplay.

However, a shadow was cast over the peripheral last week when it was discovered that EBWorld and another online retailer had pushed the Adapter back to May in their release lists. We contacted Sega's Heather Hawkins to try to get to the bottom of this inexplicable delay, and we're happy to report that the news is good.

The "Dreamcast Broadband Adapter" will be available for purchase January 9, 2001 on the Sega Web site [www.sega.com]. In March, 2001, Sega will offer the "Dreamcast Broadband Adapter" to all retailers. Please check back with Sega in March to find the retailers nearest you.

That's...

A) great news
B) odd news

Why the time difference?
