My nephew told me that at his job they give workers a 5 minute window for lateness. So, if you clock in during that 5 minutes you won't get written up. The same goes for my work, and other businesses like Lowes and Home Depo. Of course, people take advantage of this and are constantly late. I think it's stupid and it's another example that we've become soft as a society. I try to be at least 8-10 minutes early. IMO, being late constantly should be a punishable offense.

Being late constantly is just stressful. Fighting traffic, lights to just make it to the parking lot. Then, it's a mad dash in the door. You can't even settle in and get coffee.

When I worked for a summer in factory they had some dipshit union rules, everyone stopped working like 15 minutes before the shift ended, but if you punched out before the official end time you would be written up. Dumb me I stopped like everyone and just punched out so I could go home instead of stand around for 10 minutes, got yelled at for that.

Isn't that due to how most time clocks function? They record time in tenths of an hour, or 6 minute increments. If you punch in between 8:00:00 and 8:05:59, it records 8.0 on the card or in the system. At 8:06:00 it records 8.1 and you're late.

I never understood people who make such a huge deal about it. It's not a couple minutes that are going to change productivity. The people who will get annoyed over someone being a minute or two late will be quick at pointing it out, but don't realize that person probably stayed a few minutes late way more often than they were late by a few minutes.

Now if someone is consistently late by 10-15 or more minutes and always leaves early and books all their appointments on work days etc then yeah that's bad, but a few minutes is silly to get worked up about.

Depends - if you're talking stupid retail jobs... or rather, ANY job that requires you to "clock in" - then yeah, those jobs are handled by the piss poor retards of society 9 times out of 10.

In the big boy world I can be late all I want. No one gives a shit because...
1) it's presumed that I have something more important to do
2) That I won't report more hours than what I actually worked
3) That I will finish my work by the deadlines, regardless of how late I come in or how early I leave.

For nearly all my working career, if you weren't 30 minutes early...you were late. (equipment operators are usually expected to check oil and fluids, clean windows if needed, start and warm up equipment, get lined up on what you were doing, etc., before the start of work)

As a crane operator, if I was late, there was usually a crew of ironworkers, pipefitters, carpenters, piledrivers, etc. who couldn't do much of their work until I got there...best to NOT be late.

My dad worked for himself for most of his working life and was always 30 min-1hr early. He liked being early so he could get coffee, and relax. My mom on the other hand was the opposite. Always late.

I can even remember when she'd vacuum the house at 3am. Funny how that worked out.

The last time I had an hourly job I believe it was a 5 minute grace period. They assigned points for being late (1/2 a point) and missing days (1 point). The flaw in their system was that 'late' was 5 minutes to 4 hours.

You can probably guess what happened on days that I realized I was going to be late.

I've had office jobs pretty much my entire adult life where that attitude has boiled down to, "get your job done, don't miss meetings and get in at least 40 hours a week so as to meet contractual requirements. Beyond that, we don't really care."

If somebody's work days are M-F they don't really have a choice in when they book appointments.
