Seemingly poor DVD quality on my laptop

Hey guys,

I own a Dell Latitude D800 (with a 15.4" Widescreen LCD that goes up to 1280x800). The video adapter in my laptop is a Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti4200. To watch my DVDs, I use Cyberlink's PowerDVD 6. Within the software, I'm using the Cyberlink Eagle Vision (CLEV-2) in order to make colors warmer. I also have it performing Smart De-Interlacing - Automatic Mode. Within Windows itself, I do not have any Display Color Profiles existing nor do I even mess around with the Saturation, Hue, etc.

For some reason, the video quality is sub-par whenever I watch a DVD on my laptop. For instance, within dark areas of the screen (eg. a dark room in the background), I can see "blotches" of blue/red color. It seems to be a by-product of the CLEV-2 exacerbating the noise. Even if I disable the CLEV-2, the blotches are still there (but they are not as noticible).

I know that DVD video has a resolution of 720x480 so if I view a movie at a higher resolution (such as my 1280x800), the video is essentially enlarged which I'm assuming would make the video quality worse. However, I've even tried lowering the resolution to 800x600 and the video quality is still poor (but that's probably because the 800x600 is not the native resolution but is scaled down by my GeForce 4).

Within games and even movie trailers, the colors and images are fine. However, I can't seem to get good DVD video quality on Cyberlink. Maybe I can notice these blemishes because I'm sitting closer to the screen when I'm watching it on my laptop as opposed to my television (but again, I don't see this with lower quality .avi, .wmv, and .qt files). I tried using the Intervideo 4 that came with my laptop but the video quality is even worse in that.

Everyone else seems to love DVDs on their laptop whereas I think the colors are dull, the image noise is too high, and it's simply not as good as watching it on my standard definition television! Help!

Have you tried different dvd players?

Turn the settings off on your current one and see how it looks?

Yeah, I've tried watching it using Cyberlink PowerDVD 6 as well as Intervideo DVD 4 (which came with the laptop). I KNOW for a fact it's not the movies because I watch them on my 27" standard definition television via my XBox (Component hookups) and it's damn purdy.

It's just...the colors are so dead when I watch them on my laptop. And if I bump up the saturation, contrast, etc., the image noise becomes exacerbated. It's so hard to describe!

Try turning hardware acceleration on and off in PDVD. Install ForceASPI 1.7 too.

May it be just your screen on your laptop is poor quality?

I haven't heard of many owners of the same laptop as yours complaining.

Do you get the spots when you just up the brightness of it?
