Hi just got my new gainward geforce 4 ti4200 last night (upgrading form a kyro 2) plugged it in and ran 3dmark 2001 SE. Now my old kyro was giveing me a score of 890+/- so my new card kicked its ass with a score of 3800+/- . However when looking at the comparitve score for other cards on computers with the same processer it was only offering up a score that was 10% less than a geforee 4mx!!! Now maybe its just me but that can't be good. So any way here are my stats can anyone give any suggestions as to how to improve my performance please not i'm upgrading the processor etc in a monthj or 2 so i don't want to spend any money untill then

P3 700 mhz
256meg pc100 (i know this is probably a limiting factor)
dfi PA6 mother board (again this only has AGPx2 no x4 so i guess this oculd be holding it up)
235watt PSU (again could br the source of the problem
Gainward Geforce 4 ti4200 golden sample over clocked to 310mhz core 550mhz memory
Running latest .42 drivers
40 maxtor HD
Windows XP

So please suggestions helpfull coments are all wlecome. Oh and i went through and completely removed all my driver files formy old card. Thanks

I think you should consider that your CPU is the limiting factor. Just take a look at the CPU scaling Anand made:

Sub -200$ Video Card Roundup

Sadly there is no scaling for the 3D Benchmark, but in Quake III a 800 Mhz CPU looses nearly 50 (!!) Frames compared to a 1200 Mhz.

Wel supposedly the scores on the 3d mark website are scaled per processor so the other scores iwas seeing were all for 700mhz p3 processors. So realisticalyy i should be getting another 2000 points on the score (the geforce 4 ti4400 was scoring about 6000 on an eqivalent processor). And like i said i'm going to get a xp 2100 in a month or 2 after the new core comes out.

I know it said you cleaned the driver files but I just wanted to mention that KyroII's have a HUGE set of registry adjustments that are game specific tweaks including some for 3D#. I dont know if this can interfere but I imagine it could.

i went trough and removed all the inf and pmx (i think thats what they are called) for the kyro. Do you have any suggestions for cleaning the left over junk from the registry?

The best way however, is to do a clean install. This will cure just about 98% graphics/driver related issue. And again, Pentium 3 700Mhz is rather slow.

I have the same concerns with my brand new gainward ti4200 128mb golden sample.

Admittedly, I am a noobie - can't even get 3DMark 2001SE to work(missing .dll !), but i loaded quake iii arena and got only 70-90 fps at the benchmark settings used in the latest anandtech review where they got 172 on a mildly better cpu. (it goes to like 135 when I look at the sky, though)

I hope I'm doing things right, but I have yet to switch to the detonator drivers or to flash my mobo bios.

ps- in brief, how do u do a clean install?

To do a fresh install you have to format your harddrive and reinstall everything.. windows etc.. if you search on google you should find a nice simple guide to follow...

Hmm, my friend have an almost equal system but with a GF3 TI 500 and 512mb sdram and everything on default, but on a ?clean? install he gets 4800 - 5000 point on 3D mark, I?ve read some tests and you should beat that ?Only comparing the 4200 against 500?...

PS: Not all progs and games updates the registry when you change CPU or ram (possibly VGA ram too (have no idea?))

So maybe a re install of OS (or recovery) something is all u need to get those extra 1000 ? 2000 point = )...

I forgot to mention that all the scores I?ve encountered (me, my friends and some/allot where I go on the web) always score better on MS W2K (aprox 500 to 700 on 3D mark) than on MS XP... Don?t know if this is really true...

(edit : he uses PC 133 ram)
