I have a Dell Dimension 8400 with a PCI-e/SATA motherboard. This case has one large rear casing fan -- sort of a huge tunnel fan for the monolithic heatsink/fan contraption which Dell puts over their CPU sockets.

I'm looking for an effective and accurate way to monitor the temperature of the case and a new graphics card I will be putting into the machine tonight. According to the specifications below, what sort of hardware could I purchase which would reliably do the job?

Dell does not have temperature sensors on the motherboard, so I assume I need new hardware for this monitoring. The card is a PCI-e eVGA 6800 GS.

Most specifically, I would like hardware to monitor the case environment near the graphics card, near the processor, and elsewhere in locations where it's important to monitor temps. (I may not be aware of all of those locations.)

I have an empty floppy drive space. I also have two consecutive empty PCI slots next to the PCI-e graphics card slot. However, I don't think I'll really be able to put any card into slot 1 because the new 6800 GS should sort of overhang, rendering PCI slot 1 useless.

Items inside the case include: 350W PSU, 6800 GS PCI-e, sound card (PCI), two opticals, two hard drives. THANKS VERY MUCH FOR HARDWARE SUGGESTIONS!!!!!

Both the GPU and CPU have the capability to monitor their own temps, that really should be all you need.

I have the cooldrive 6, 3 fan channels and 4 sensors. They're pretty scarce now, there is a place that has them for 15 bucks...

Without the HD cooling there's the Aerogate 3, same thing, very hard to find. Or any of the Aerogate series. Also the Hardcano series from TT is supposed to be pretty good.

EDIT: Doubtful that there's "no" temperature sensors on the motherboard. DL SpeedFan and see what readings you get. http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Also check into replacing the PSU. Always a good idea.

And the 6800GS should have a temp monitor on it as well. If you can get speedfan to work with your system you should be able to get away with not needing a temp monitor/fan controller.
