I am looking for recommendations on a new NAT firewall/router for my home network. Currrently, I have business-class Road Runner (4.5/512) connected to a P2-300 system running smoothwall. Over the past few months, however, it has begun freezing. It starts as a general slowdown of my network, and degrades to the point where I cannot even connect to the smoothwall's administrative web server. When it reaches this point, I have to reboot the system, and it works fine for another 12-24 hours.
I need advice because my track record for firewall/router appliances sucks. Before the smoothwall, I tried an SMC AWBR 7004. I used it for about 3 months, but it could not handle a lot of connection through port-forwarding. When it got overloaded, it would just shut down all connections and restart. I still use this box as my wireless router, albeit with horrible range. I tried a netgear wireless router before the SMC, but it locked up ever 15-30 minutes, and was quickly returned.
Before that, I has a Sonicwall SOHO 2, which worked very well up until the day it would not power on. I have considered the Sonicwall Tz170, which I think would fit my needs very well, but it is a little too expensive for me right now.
I continuously seed multiple torrents, and participate in 1 public and 1 private p2p network. Additionally, I run a small web/ftp/email server (with very little traffic). Whatever I get, it needs to support the forwarding of port ranges, and it needs to support a lot of open connections. If it supports wireless, that is great, but by no means crucial.
Any advice would be appreciated.
