I'm entertaining the idea of going back to school. I live about 50 miles away, so I'm looking for an efficient car to do the commute. On top of that, I've been doing alot of research on veggie diesels for the last year or so. This makes the VW line of cars with diesel engines somewhat attractive to me.

1 problem...I don't know jack about VW's. I'm probably going to be looking for a 96 or newer car, depending on miles, age, price, yadda yadda.

Are there any details anyone would care to share on which year is better or when any model changes or diesel powertrain changes occured?

if so, thanks!

I have one and I love it. Your best bet for TDI diesel info is the forums at http://www.tdiclub.com/ those guys rule and will give you all the info you will ever need.

My father-in-law is a VW diesel freak and has been for about 25 years or so. He currently owns three of them and he swears by them. He also frequents the TDIclub forums and gets a lot of good information from that board.

I have owned two VW diesels and was very pleased with them. They run forever and get great mileage while doing so. Also, they handle pretty nicely. The only drawback IMO is the non-turbo models are pretty slow.

TDI club is a great resource and has been around a long time.

There's a Yahoo group as well http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/VW-TDI/

I'm a big fan of VW diesels, but honestly, it's because they're the only game in the US outside of Mercedes. By their nature diesels are more economical & less maintenance than gasoline powered vehicles, although the gap is narrowing because of the electronic control systems necessary for the current performance/mileage in today's diesels.

I anticipate becoming a Honda diesel fan if they bring a diesel Accord to the US.
