Hi all...

what would be a good drive to recommend in terms of price/quality for writing my own DVDs to play back in my DVD player?

thanks!!

eh??? there is no standard? that sux

I don't know if my DVD player will play DVD-Rs, but this is what it said on the box (panasonic DVD-RP62S):

" Progressive-scan output for incredibly smooth, flicker-free video with compatible TVs (learn more)

Plays DVD-Video, DVD-R, CD-DA and CD-R/RW, plus MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD "

well then it will play burnt dvds if its on a dvd-r burner. the stupid standerd seems to be leaning to dvd+r and i dont no y because it wont play on dvd players.
here is a link to some burners. have fun
🙂

You are VERY mistaken if you think DVD+R won't play on a stand-alone DVD player.

If anything, DVD+R is MORE compatible than DVD-R. That's why it seems the market is tilting towards +R.

That said, either +R or -R is compatible with about 75% of today's players.

I picked up a Memorex DVD+RW from Compusa last week. Turns out to be a rebadged Ricoh, and the same used by Dell OEM. Can't get the kids off the computer to burn my videos yet though!

CDRINFO is a good source as is VCDHELP. As for players supporting +R, I was just having this conversation with my brother and he said his Sony Progressive Scan plays +R's, even though Sony's site says "DVD-R/DVD+RW". My 2 year old Toshiba DVD player won't even play CDR's.

"wait for a standard"...lol ... WHY?

Dvd-r is 90% compatible with players, why not just find a player you know is compatible? DVD+r/w has not been nearly as compatible, but that may change as new dyes/ processes are developed. DVD+r/w has a few negligible features over DVD-r/w, but has no "good" companies supporting it that I know of.

The latest independent tests I've seen show DVD-R and DVD+R are both compatible with about 80% of the players currently on the market. Neither holds a real advantage there. And +RW and -RW discs are about equally incompatible, too, with a slight advantage for -RW at the moment. The difference between +RW and -RW is that you can incrementally add data to a +RW disc, to add more date to a -RW disc ALL the data has to be rewritten. Makes a HUGE difference in speed, not to mention that current +RW drives write at 2.4x vs. 2x for -RW. Depending on you needs those differences are hardly "negligible".

And I guess Sony, Philips, Hewlett-Packard, Ricoh, Yamaha and Mitsubishi Chemical/Verbatim are not "good" companies? They all are members of the DVD+RW Consortium and support that format.

You should get your facts straight before you pose as an expert.
