I have been doing some research and shopping around for about a month now and i'm at the point where I could use some input from others :)

I have visited this site for a few years now, and have gotton some good info on reviews and based my choices on them, but right now im a little stumped.

I have about 300 to spend, my specs are in my sig. Ive been looking on newegg.com at cards because i hear and read nothing but good things about their service and customer assistance.

I have been looking at the Geforce 6600 gt and the 6800 gt's. My board needs agp so pci express is out. I have looked at a lot of brands and specs, and noticed that the 6600 gt's have a higher core clock than the 6800 gt's. Ive also noticed that only some 6600 gt's (like the XFX PVT43AUD Geforce 6600GT) have 256 megs on the card. I didnt see GDDR3 in the specs so maybe im missing something, not sure.

below is a list that im looking for the 6600 gt's
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi...y=38&minPrice=&maxPrice=&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

and this is for the 6800 gt's
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi...y=38&minPrice=&maxPrice=&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

One other reason why im keen on newegg is they take paypal, and for someone who has just sold a few goodies on ebay so that I can make this upgrade purchase, its suits me just fine :)

as far as the 6800's are concerned, i was partial to the MSI NX6800GT-T2D256, but that was well over my 300 budget. Until I scrolled down and saw a refurbished one for 294.00.
I called newegg and they told me the difference is that it could have been sent back due to sending the wrong product, opened by mistake and last but not least............repaired. I tried to ask them if they could tell me what the history would be of the very card they send me and of course they were not able to say.

this will be a nigh & day upgrade from my still going strong ti 4200, but i want to make sure i get my bang for my much hard earned buck. if getting a 6600GT is more senseable, then I would like to know, especially since ive read some people overclocking the GT's to match the Ultras, 6600 to 6800 speeds etc. I have also read on the BFG 6800GT that people are unlocking pipes etc. If there is such a thing for the 6600's as well i'm curious to know what cards would be best for flexability.

If you have read this much of my rant, I wish to say thanxx, and even more if you can shed some light on my search for a "sensable" purchase.

first of all the clock on the 6600gt is so that it can compete with higher end ones. if it was noraml, it would suck. but even though the 6800gt is only 350, its way way better and definetly you should get it. i have one and i love it.

I'm not up to par on US prices, but your options should be either [GeForce] 6800GT or [Radeon] X800XL.

I'd go for the X800XL if you can find one for $25-30 less than the cheapest 6800GT.

as a 24/7 rig as you say you'd need to be real careful with the 6600gt agp as i found out. there really is no aftermarket cooling solution and at the clocks it runs at it can get toasty. the vf 700 might work depending on your case.

that said, i'd rather have the 6800gt or short of that then you have enough bank for the 800xl.
