So I built a socket 939 gaming rig a few years back, since then I have switched from gaming to programming and 3d rendering. I am trying to get a little more life out of that system since I can't afford to build anew right now.
Current relevant hardware:
Asus A8V Deluxe mobo
OCZ 500w power supply
2x1024 non-remarkable RAM
Hardware to replace:
AMD Athlon64 2800+ Winchester
ati radeon 9800XT
My proposed upgrades:
$269 - PNY VCQFX3000-PB Quadro FX3000 256MB 256-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card
$189 - AMD Opteron 170 Denmark 2.0GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Processor
This machine needs to last me 3months-1year as a graphics workstation (until I find a job), then it will be used as a server.
Budget is slightly flexible but needs to be around $500. The programs I will be using are Adobe cs, ZBrush 3, Maya, and 3ds max. As well as building applications that use Ogre.
I look forward to your excellent advice.
