Seeking advice on upgrading wireless network/extending range

Currently have a wireless tp-link 54g router on the main level of the house, and am trying to get access to a computer in the basement with a 54g wireless adapter. Currently it barely see's the network, and keeps dropping.

Not sure if I should look for a repeater, or upgrade to a new router and access point.

I do not care about the speed of the network that much, I care most about signal strength.

I was thinking about the buffalo wireless router here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833162033

But I am not sure it would solve my range issues, and considered this buffalo adapter too: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833162027

Is it worth the extra 20$ to get the buffalo adapter vs a cheaper N adapter with good reviews?

The other option I was considering was a repeater/extender to go in the basement, but those are also around 40$ and not sure if its worth it to get that over a new N router.

Thanks 🙂

There are few ways to deal with an issue like this and there is No way to know ahead which one would help.

I can tell what I would do.

Get the Buffalo Router that you linked to. It has stronger output signal so it might work better.

Configure your current WRT54g to work as a Wireless bridge (after flashing it with DD-WRT).

Use it as the Wireless Card for the computer in the basement.

If the signal is too weak, lay a CAT6 cable from the computer out of the basement door and install the WRT54g Wireless bridge there.

Here is a list of Routers (end of page), http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installation

Here how to configure, http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Bridged

Doesnt look like my router is able to be flashed (WR541G). It should work though if I just used it as a bridge connected to my basement pc though correct?
