I need a laptop and I need it pretty soon... needs to have a good-quality matte screen for use in a typical fluorescent-light room, and would also like good 3D performance for home or during the long periods of downtime while on shift.
I have two particular choices catching my eye at the moment; one is the Inspiron 15 7000 with i5 6300HQ and a GTX 4GB 960M. Display is a bit dim but good quality overall. I can add four years of extended warranty AND 4 years of accident insurance to cover any bumps & spills for only $200 for a total just under $1200 Canadian.
The other alternative is the brand-spanking-new Alienware 15" with the same processor, but has the new GTX 1060 video solution. The screen quality is better and the 3D video is at least 2.5x faster! In fact, it'd be faster than any of my desktop machines! Big downside... it's $1700C with the standard 1yr warranty. The Alienware warranty is also absurdly expensive and the same 4 years with accident insurance adds another $700! Double the cost in the end.
I suppose I could hold out a little longer and hope for an Inspiron replacement with the up-and-coming GTX 1050... but I can't wait much longer.
Of course, I'll be keeping an eye open for a super deal I could afford to buy outright instead of spreading it out a bit.
Your thoughts?
