Seeking a Good (All Around Mouse)

I am a big time gamer so of course the first two choices everyone will say is Logitech or Razer.

Problem is I am not a big fan of either of their mice. Now I originally love Razers old Boomslang, back in the day that was the best thing since sliced bread. Perfect design, huge buttons, I mean it had it all and then some. But now they come out with this little toy looking things that have the crappiest side buttons I have ever seen. They ran out of fancy parts so they pulled out the pinto parts for the lame assed side buttons. Throw that in with the fact that it is unusually small, I would definatly not call it a mouse for a average persons hands, and extremely light and imo it is just not up to par when compared. Sure it has a fast response time, so what if its uncomfortable the buttons are in a awkward angle and it just cramps your hands after playing for short periods of time. This said I am sure some people love the Razer mice and thats great, each of us can have our own opinion, what I am saying is not right or wrong, just whats right for me.

Ok then you say if I am such a hater of the Razer then why not try out the Logitech. Well I thought this way as well and I did so. But the Logitech has some equally frustrating aspects. Mainly their proprietary button control setup. I cannot for the life of me get many of their buttons to work at all in many games. For instance Battlefield and Battlefield II. I set my scroll and mouse wheels to many fuctions in games, especially in 3d shooters and such. But after much searching and having no luck I gave up and figured its impossible with Logitechs stupid proprieatary crap software. Great mouse, dont get me wrong, but I hate the software that wont work in my games.

But to make a long story short does anyone know of a nice gaming mouse thats not too light, has a nice dpi, comfortable for a med to large handed person and use more generic type software so it will work with games like Battlefield II and such. The only one I have seen close to the Logitech MX1800 and Razer Diamondback is the IOGear 5 Button USB Laser 1600 Mouse. I have seen it for as low as $20 for a true laser mouse that is also 1600 DPI. Thats pretty dang sweet, but I cant find anyone whom has used one.

Well thats all folks, Please help me, I am really going crazy trying to find a decent mouse. I tried a MX700, a MX1000, a Microsofte Explorer Pro 4.0 (Are all scroll wheels screwed up on these or just mine, as in they feel stuck realllly slow) and no luck with any. I am not going wireless as even the 1000 was a bit jerky in a wierd way, more intermittent but very frustrating for such a expensive mouse. But again please anyone post any advice you can, I would be very greatful.

(The problem I have in BF and BF II with all my logitech mice and all I want to do is set my scroll wheel on my mouse to cockpit view when I scroll forward and flyby view when I scroll back. I did this mainly in BF because it helped me gauge my accuracy when bombing and it was also a nice way for a mouse keyboard player to peak behind me ever so often. This has not worked since my Boomslang 🙁. Which honestly even though I loved the layout of the mouse it was a very poorly made mouse, went through 3 of them in six months. My logitechs have never died, which is another good plus for them, but again if the mouse dont work then its hard to find the point).

I did a weeks worth of research and I decided on the Logitech MX518. It's got good reviews and my experience with Logitech products have been nothing but the best. I just purchased mine last night here:
$39, Free shipping
I mainly purchased this mouse to play BF2 and one feature I really liked was the adjust-on-the-fly sensitivity.
Here's all the specs on it: Logitech site

Thanks Jason. I have seriously leaned towards the 518 myself. The only thing holding me back was the inability to configure some of my keys for use in BF II. Say I want to assign the scroll wheel to change the cockpit view of flying machines to look forward and flyby. Well from every Logitech I have tried I cant. That and I could not even get side buttons to configure as well. Its not a requirement as I can get by with a two button mouse if I have.. But I would seriously prefer one that I could configure those features with in games as well as out of games. If there is a way to get the 518 to do this then I would be almost positive that would be what I am purchaisng.

But thanks again for advice and I would be greatful if anyone has anymore 🙂

When I get my mouse Wednesday I'll see if I can assign the scroll wheel to the chopper views. The way they have them set up I think it might be impossible, with any mouse. I'll give it a try though.

Great thank you friend.

Not looked at it in a while so dont remember what they were like in BF II but I know in BF I all you had to do was assign a key setting (Or mouse in this case) to frontal cockpit view (Or whichever is view forward). This I would have to scroll twice as the first view would show the cockpit and the second view would just show a frontal view that gave you a better view to fight with. Then I would set scroll back to flyby view, that way I could hold my mouse steady for a moment and watch as my bombs hit the ground. Worked very well overall.

But if you get it working please let me know as that will definatly help me make up my mind 🙂

Also wanted to add that I did see the Copperhead has changed the buttons from what the Diamondback used. They look much better, much easier to seperate and much easier to click, they did move them back a little but not sure that would be that annoying or limiting. Only problem on that one is cash, man thats a expensive mouse. So until my rich uncle dies dont think I will be buying it 🙂 But please keep the advice coming.

The scroll wheel in the MS-Intellimouse Explorer 4.0 series is indeed different. It's much smoother, with none of the tactile 'clicks' that older editions used to have. It's great for web-surfing, document scrolling, etc. Of course, this can be a difficulty if you need to change weapons fast in 1st person shooters. To compensate, I use the thumb buttons, which IMO have actually worked better than using a scroll wheel.

The problem I have with the wheel on my Explorer is that it feels sticky, not smooth at all. That and it seems to skip scrolling, I will scroll several times with nothing happening then it will catch eventually and start scrolling again. But the sticky feeling is just not good at all to me. Now smooth would not bother me as long as the page was scrolling each time I turned the wheel, but the problem I have is intermittent sticky feeling that is just bad all around.

Anyone have any luck getting the scroll wheel and side buttons to be setup and useable on a Mx518 or G5 in BF II? Would really like to hear input on that as it is I am leaning their way but just going to be a pain to have the extra functions and be unable to use them while in game.

Well I got the mouse today and I really like it. You can assign 5 of the buttons in BF2: (R/L Click, Scroll click, and the two thumb buttons on the side. I tried assigning the scroll wheel to cycle chopper views but they won't, sorry. I must say that the adjust on the fly sensitivity makes playing BF2 alot better, no more picking up the mouse and sliding it as fast as you can to turn the turrets on Tanks and APCs. Also makes evasive maneuvers in choppers alot easier. I'm happy with, you might want to give it a shot if you can't find anything better DFloyd.

Thanks friend, will give that script a shot and see if I can work something out.

Thanks much for info though and for keeping me posted on what did and what did not work. I know its probably a strange setup but I got very used to it back with BF 1942 and its really hard to stop doing it, well it would be if I had the choice heh. But going to keep checking and see if anyone else has any other advice and will probably decide and pick up something by the first of the month.

Thanks again.

May of finally found a winner ! ! ! !

After much research and reading quite a few reviews I think I have found my mouse.

Its big (Which is a plus as I have larger hands and a larger mouse is much more comfortable). Its ergonomic, its super fast, its got lots of buttons and its cheap.

Anyone had or used this mouse? It sounds amazing for the price.

anyone able to get the mx518 configured so that the dpi setting shows up when you change it, in bf2 ?

Well after having the Optorite for a good while now I must say its an amazing mouse. You are correct it is light, but does not feel any ligther than my friends razer and it is a much better shape, plus the buttons are alot easier to use. Not to mention its super fast.

For the price I dont think a better mouse exists. So if anyone is in the market I would definatly suggest it. I love heavy mice, i prefer heavy mice, but this thing just feels great even though it is light. If you can try one out you will see what I mean.

But good luck to all in the market for one.

Good choice... but to me it felt way too light; I'm used to using a MX510, which is ridiculously heavy. I still like the MS Intellimice better though, 😛.

Logitech>Razor,

having said that...

MX510<MX518<G5

i own all three and each upgrade is worth the money, if you really want to enhance your fps skills go with a MX518 or G5, you WILL NOT be dissapointed with either.

I absolutely do not understand what you mean at all. I'm using a 510, and I found no major difference going from a generic mouse other than speed and comfort. Plus, having a nice mouse does not enhance your FPS skill, just how comfortable you can get in a FPS. If you're any good of a gamer, you should be able to play with any mouse that works like a mouse (okay, so trackballs are horrible).

Norm

Well first of all your statement is totally nulenvoid with sayign trackballs are horrible, b/c yes you are right in that the more compfortable you are with a mouse(track or optical/laser) the better you will be, but the design of the mx/g my your ability for comfort even greater, and also might i add the on the fly sensitivity change is really nice. basically stay with logitech and get a mx518 or a g5. G5=l33t my entire clan uses them and there was an increase in performance, especially pistol shooting. and yes a better mouse does enhace you fps ability.

Wow... you spelled "null and void" wrong.

And it can enhance my fps ability? So I can go from a 1-10 to 50-1 by buying a better mouse? Awesome!

i have the microsoft intellimouse. i have huge hands and i use my index finger to scroll...because my middle finger is too big. it LOOKS good, but it's not if you have big hands. i like to play fps and set the sensitivity on high. i have to use my thump and pinky to move it a millimeter (which is fine) but when i move it a tiny bit, the screen won't move. maybe it's the surface...but you should just shell out the extra $15 for a 518 which MUST be a better mouse than this.
