seek streaming videos

I'm using ubuntu 8.04 and i'm trying to stream some videos (avi). They play using ff3 or opera 9.51 but I cant seek and the fast forward and rewind buttons dont do anything. Is there another plugin I should use or can I configure it?

Depends on what type of streaming media it is. You probably can't go backwards and definitely not forward as the data is just going in, being processed, then thrown away. Try opening it from mplayer directly with the command mplayer http://address.to.file
 
tried opening it with the command line with mplayer and vlc and cant seek backwards, can go forward with some success
