To anyone who can advise: I've keyword searched these boards, but couldn't find advice on finding space-efficient speakers. All I see is advice on buying good sound-quality speakers (such as Logitech). But when I saw the photo of the latter, it looks like there's this big box surrounded by 4 speakers.

I don't need all that! Nor do I have room to spare.

All I want is 2 compact speakers, but don't know which brand/model to look for. (In fact, I'm presently using a KDS 15" monitor which comes with built in speakers. This would suit me fine, except that I'm becoming ill due to my EMF sensitivity - the KDS monstrosity is practically electrocuting me.

So I'm actually in the market as well for a best-buy 15" flat-panel monitor - btw, the 17" is too expensive for me. But in conjunction with the monitor, I'm in the market for BASIC speakers. I don't need super sound quality. Of course, if I can get fairly decent sound quality in some inexpensive compact speakers, that would be a plus. ;)

BTW, is there any source where I can get both monitor plus speakers (not necessarily the same brand) at a best buy? Then I'd just have to pay shipping costs from one place. Is Pricegrabber a good bet? I know you may suggest Ebay, but that's out for me, since it requires credit card yada yada. I prefer payment by check (that is, until such time as debit cards would become more secure).

My preferred price range:
compact speakers - $50?? $75?? does this sound right?
15" flat-panel + tilt-view - approx. $200 or less (Microtek? Viewsonic?

Office Max has some cheapo $9 - $9 speakers, but they don't even have a sound control on 'em. I couldn't find them at first this morning because I didn't even see the box =-O

hi,
i wouldnt rule out the logitech z-340 speakers. they do have a bass module (which sits on the floor somewhere out of the way) and their 2 satellites are quite small. and at ~$36 they are quite cheap.
as for lcd screens, i'd reccomend something from samsung like the synchmaster 151s for $269 shipped from newegg. or whatever best-buy charges for it.
dont go too cheap on the monitor, it's the part of the pc that you have the most interaction with.
good luck

Monsoon PlanarMedia 9. They're pretty good, and my only gripe is with the headphone out; it's kinda hissy at low volumes.

For that price you intend to spend, you could actually get some really decent 2.1 PC speakers. But since you want "space-efficient" I'm outta ideas!

Subwoofers does improve sound a lot IMHO!

For crying out loud, does no company put out PLAIN BASIC speakers without a space-usurping box yadda yadda thrown in?

All I want is two space-efficient speakers, one on the right, one on the left, and that's fine with me. I've been living for years with the tinny speakers on my KDS, so believe it or not the forementioned would, for me, be moving quite a giant step upward!

That's all my original post was asking! My gosh, the world is getting so OVERQUALIFIED and OVER-FRILLED that I can't take it anymore!

Above all, I wish to avoid needless clutter! I'm more into research than into music and sound. (Research into my health conditions). All these frills are very low on my scale of priorities. Health is now my top priority. I'm just mentioning this so you understand where I'm coming from.

Please, can somebody advise me with what I need? So that I can get on with researching & buying a flat-panel monitor which won't electrocute me (by dint of interacting with my mouthful of mercury amalgam dental fillings)...

Thanks in advance to anyone who can relate to the primitive mindset ;)

P.S. TO FOO-FOO: SO FAR IT LOOKS AS IF THE Z340 MAY BE CLOSEST TO WHAT I SEEK IF THERE'S NO OTHER CHOICE FOR ME. IF ONLY THERE WEREN'T THAT BOX! ANYWAY, THANKS FOR THE INPUT...
P.P.S. I just researched the 151s Synchmaster, and I thank you for the info. I think I'll go with Newegg for $269 including shipping, because they accept personal checks... Now, for those speakers! Maybe I'll phone Newegg, they might just have what I seek, & I'll kill 2 birds w/one stone
