Seeing Drive Information In 7

dfuze

I have a server in the basement running windows XP pro. I have 4 drives in it that are shared on the network. On my regular desktop I'm running 64 bit 7 pro and have networked to see the server's drives. One thing that I can't do though is see much information about those drives, like how much space is used or left on it, but I could when the desktop was running XP.

Is there a setting I can change to allow this?

Win 7 is no different than XP for this. Two quick ways to see the same thing - 1. Computer, Select a Drive, then Properties. 2. Windows Explorer, select a Drive, then Properties. You'll see a graphic of used vs freespace.

Ooops! A thousand pardons - you are right - it does not work across a network.

Hmmm!

You don't have to enable the start menu changes , just the explorer changes.
XP puts file size of the drive in the explorer, 7 does away with it for whatever reason.

In Windows 7 the status bar in Explorer doesn't show the free disk space and the size of the selected files. Classic Explorer fixes that:

Tick the show free space and file size in status bar box in classic explorer options.

When i VPN to work i was getting a ton of errors with browsing network drives (not mapped). This reg hack took care of the problem.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
Create a key named LmCompatibilityLevel with REG_DWORD value 1 (0x00000001)
