See you in a few hours. Going to install win7 pro 64.

blog.anandtech.com - Nothing to see hear folks. I'll spare you the read, nothing interesting bellow 🙂

Just picked up my offical coppy of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit at NCIX along with a 1Gig stick of laptop memory for 1 cent. The memory was on sale for 14.99 with a $15.00 mail in rebate, lol, just what I need for my new HP mini 311.

I've been running the beta of windows 7 for quite a while now and am very happy with it. I knew I would eventually need to buy it soon so I picked it up while down at NCIX. I've been running the 32bit Ultra version (all the betas were the "Ultra" edittion). I got the 64 bit professional version which should have everything I'll need. Now to make sure I don't have anything on my Windows partition before go ahead and format.

Now I really need to get a job, been about 7 months now lol. Going to drop my resume off at NCIX and a number of other computer sales places once I work up the courage.

Stupid Question of the day: Do I need to do anything in the BIOS to "turn on" "long mode" i.e 64bit addressing for the processor or just install win64 and go. I should know this, but I've never actually installed a 64bit OS.

DONE

wait, so you actually earned 1 cent for the memory. 😎

I installed the pro 64bit ~2 weeks ago on me new rig and it works like a charm. Got it from the $30 student deal. installed on clean HDD, wouldn't complete the install b/c the update mumbojumbo, so I just went back and re-formatted, re-installed on that partition. worked like a charm, passed activation and everything,

I  my win7 Pro

You always forget to back something up before a format.. no matter how hard you try.

Yeah there's always something. However this time there shouldn't be too much. I try to enforce strict separation of my own data from the software. I change all the default dirs to a data directories on a seperate partition from my windows partition. But like you say there's always something(s).

why 64bit?

The drivers have just about matured by now and the speed difference between the two is just about 0 for most purposes. Going forward that's where all the development in terms of software and drivers will be. Also although right now I only have 3 Gigs of RAM, and so I could run either version, I would like to keep the option for upgrading to 4Gigs+ in the near future.

Yeah the memory was a nice shock. When I got the HP Mini 311 as a Christmas present I knew that I would want to upgrade it from 1 to 2 Gigs. So the other day I went on the NCIX web site to look at mem prices and what do you know they had this laptop mem deal where you get a cent back 🙂

I've been running the win7 beta since it came out and couldn't be happier. I had no problems with Vista before it either and together I find them the best OS I have ever used!

Agreed. Even if you ghost / back up EVERYTHING there are some things you can't reasonably get to, like Network Dialup Icons / Settings for Remote VPN, etc. Argh.

Even faster depending on how good the system is. Windows 7 install was probably the easiest install I have ever seen.

Not if you perform an upgrade install.

I'm running a 3.2ghz (OC'd) C2D machine with 4gb DDR2 and SATA drives. Bitch took FOREVER to install.

It flied on my Pentium Dual Core, under 2ghz cheap Acer lappy. But that is because I performed a clean install.

Yep, I love Win7 so much I seriously HAD to upgrade both my laptop and my desktop. It should have been called "Windows:Glorious". Terrible, I know, but I've never loved a new version of Windows so much.

I gave Vista about half a year before I upgraded, desiring it but not in a crazy rush to upgrade. And I liked Vista, a lot, but mainly because it was simply better than XP. Each version has just been "better than the last."
This time... it was more than simply being better than the previous. And even then, it isn't necessarily worlds better than Vista.

Vista was crazy stable for me, as long as you took care to use the right drives and software. And I was running Vista 64bit, which took forever to have mature drivers and support, but yet I managed just fine. It wasn't the nightmare people made it out to be. Bad press goes a LONG way apparently.

Win7 is a more mature Vista to some extent. And yet, there's more. It's SO damn snappy on both my machines, all my software on my desktop, running 7 Ultimate 64bit (from Vista Ultimate 64bit... gotta love student discount deals), made the transition without a hitch.
The UI is just so much better, the animations and just the Explorer experience in general, little touches here and there, it has seen a great upgrade in that department. Everything feels logically placed, new options and controls feel so obvious, it's like "why didn't they think of these things sooner?"
But in general, as soon as more apps support Jump Lists for the Taskbar, it will be complete. Mozilla, I'm looking at you dammit! Promised very soon I hear (maybe it's in 3.6 RC1? Haven't tried it yet).

Yes, I will admit Mac OS X fanboys - I have been jealous of your dock. So much that I had to use a third party dock app on my desktop. It just makes life so much easier to always have apps easy to access like that. I hate desktop icons, and having a third party app was also bad.
I must say - the Task Bar destroys you're little dock, except in one area - folders. All folder pins are lumped into one Explorer icon, and I can access files from inside those folders from the pinned icon, I have to open up an explorer window. Not much of an inconvenience, and in time I am appreciating this option all the same. Yes, I can make the "Toolbar" for a folder if I so wish and have access from there, but it's not the same as the pinned folders. But like I said, I still love the Explorer pin with jump list all the same, especially like the Frequent list for folders that I will browse too but not keep directly pinned.

See you in a couple of days...

j/k

The actual install is quite a breeze. It's the making decisions about what to toss and backing up that can take a long time. If you're going to do it more than once, making an installable usb key is very easy and makes the install 'fast'.

On one mb, there was a question about enabling a 32 or 64 bit timer. I think it worked both ways. On an igp mb, you can select whether to map the video ram above or below the 4gb boundary. I'm not sure what the benefits are considering page table magic.

I'll take a look at my BIOS settings and manual if needed. Since I only have 3Gigs of RAM I don't even need to look at any 4Gig boundary considerations yet.
