Also, notice that the exam took six hours to complete. Gives the saying"
he only had an 8th grade education" a whole new meaning, doesn't it?

Also shows you how poor our education system has gotten...

The country overall has gotten much worse, not just the educational system.

Its an evolution of capitalism and its influence on social institutions.

Umm... damn! I could only answer a couple of those. Sad thing is that most of them were in the Orthography section. Some of those were ambigious as hell!! The Arithmetic section was the worst of that.

I could pass that easily, if I had taken the course. Much of the material is far too specific to be able to do resonably well cold like this.

Well, the mechanics are simple enough, I was just annoyed by wondering how they're applied. For #6, is it a bank interest question? Is interest calculated monthly? If so, when did it start earning interest? For #7, do they mean meter by length or volume? Those and not being familiar with the emperial system of measurement is why I couldn't clean that one out.

Yeah, kids also got paddled in 1895, as well as left-handed writers disciplined and minorities not allowed to attend. 'Poor' education system is a matter of not viewing the whole picture, to some extent.
While no doubt the quality of education received is poorly reflcted in contemporary times, the will to learn lies with the individual, not the whole or the imposed. At least a high school sophomore can go to school tomorrow without being taught bigotry or fearing corporal punishment.
food for thought.

You also have to consider that these are farm kids and probably will not go on to any kind of higher education. This may be the last schoolin' they get for the rest of their lives.

Wait .. are you all complaining about the degredation of the educational system because our vernacular has changed in 100 years? Or because the substance and time of the information taught has changed? ...

No, it's my contention that current education standards rely upon independent study to yield results par with the past, vernacular aside.

Call me crazy, I don't think this test is "real". I think it was probably concocted by people desperate for something interesting to send as a chain letter. Some of those questions aren't properly understood unless you've had a senior-level university course.

And why is it an evolution of capitalism? What causes that?
