So I'm thinking of the following upgrades, nothing too extreme but looking at cashing in some Newegg promos.

Windows 7 64bit Builders Pack $89.99 after promo.

Samsung F3 Spinpoint 1TB $55 after promo

Corsair (512mb x 2) 184 pin DDR400 PC3200 $39.99

So this will get me to 2gb of ram which I know is not wonderful but twice what I have. It will also get my 64 bit processor running on a 64 bit OS as I'm using 32 bit XP now (I would do a fresh install of the OS). And of course more storage.

My plan would be to use this setup for a year or so before building a completely new PC. I would use the 1tb drive in the new PC (OS and essentials on a SSD) as well as the Windows 7. I would revert back to XP and the smaller HDD in my current PC and put it in my workshop for internet access and playing music.

Any input?? Is this a stupid upgrade?? Should I just be happy with what I have till I make a entirely new PC?

I might pick up the RAM, but besides that i would stick with what you have until you have the funds for a whole new build.

New HDD is ok; you can always carry that over to a new computer.

Buying Win 7 x64 now is iffy. I like using Windows 7, but it won't be happy with just 1GB of ram, and I think 4GB is ideal for Windows 7.

Personally, I would stick with it until you can just replace the entire computer. I don't like the idea of spending $40 for 1GB of DDR when you can buy 4GB of DDR3 for the same amount of money.

How long will an extra 1GB of RAM keep you happy? If it's another year, I think your plan is sound, since you can re-use the 1TB disk and W7 when you replace your current system. If it's another six months, I doubt I'd bother.

I agree with the other posters. It ain't worth it, save your money until you can afford a new build.

I'd do it, Win7 is worth it. It runs fine on 2GB of RAM on an A64 too.

I would also download an ISO of Win7, and install that (in trial mode) onto a fresh HD, to make certain that your mobo and hardware is compatible with Win7, and that it will run properly on that hardware, before committing an OEM license to it.

You might consider purchasing a retail upgrade license rather than the OEM, as the retail will allow you to move your Win7 install to a new motherboard once you upgrade. The OEM becomes tied to the hardware once you install.

Very sound idea, since he already owns WinXP. There has been $99 deals (at Tiger Direct and Amazon) lately on Windows 7 Home Premium Family 3 Pack. No need to buy just one when you can get three for the same price.
