Awhile ago I saw an episode of "How I met your mother" in which Barney has sex with an older woman played by Jane Seymour. Barney used the term "cougar" to describe her and it was the first time I had heard this term used before. Now I'm seeing it used more and more. Who started this term? Was it started by the show "How I met your mother" and became popular? Or did this term occur before the show?

My buddy introduced me to the term before I saw it on HIMYM, so it's been around since before that.

That was a great episode. It's on this week I see.

The term Cougar has been around for longer then 10 years.

A quick search for the term on usenet shows it being used in 1998.

"Yeah, well your boyfriend's over there getting hit on by some old cougar."
"That's his mom."
"Oh... she's affectionate."
