SED ? finally a technology that will replace LCD and CRT.

SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display) is the best of both worlds -- LCD and CRT. A flat CRT technology ?

behardware

Response time : < 1 ms
Contrast ratio : 100,000:1 (brightness is of 400 cd/m²)
Viewing angles : complete, 180° in each directions

I was optimistic about OLED technology about 2 years ago, and hoped it would replace the CRT and LCD, but large OLED panels are still no where to be seen (they?re used in some cell phones).

Given the response time of < 1ms, fantastic contrast ratios, low power consumption and thin panel format like a LCD panel, these new SED?s will be a gamers dream. My only question is about the dot-pitch -- and if it is good enough for smaller 19 - 21? displays. Plasma?s don?t have a small enough dot-pitch, and you can see when you?re close to them. Couldn?t find any info on dot-pitch.

A few more links ?

These are going to be awesome but I doubt we will see them this year, especially for reasonable prices.

My thoughts exactly. Seems like we've been hearing about a few new display technologies for several years now.

we're going to be seeing them as early as March 2006. Likely Japan first, but oh well.
and it has been said that prices will be competitive with LCD's and Plasma's of the same screen size. hmm

so hopefully when computer monitors appear they will be competitive with LCD's, because I would switch to one then 😉

Last I heard SED's were set to compete in the 30-60" TV range; I don't think they're economically feasible as smaller screens (eg. computer monitors) yet.

Would you mind having a 30" display that performed better than a 30" LCD, though?

I sure wouldn't. Doubt I'll get one though, if/when they're released.

i remember a page talking about Canon wanting to release monitors for the computer.
why not? it would be cheaper to produce and would sell extremely well. people want to save space, and if it looks as good as a CRT but is as thin as an LCD, it would have a potentially HUGE market. i'd buy one.

ahh thank you for the link. thats the one i was thinking of for the march 2006 date, but got lazy and didn't look up the source 😉

Looks like dot pitch shouldn?t be a problem ?

And, unlike plasma, SED can go small. The smallest prototype SED electron emitters anybody's managed to make so far are only a few nanometres across.

An emitter is not a subpixel; add a control matrix and phosphor blobs and things get much bigger. But when you consider that the highest density displays in at all common use today - 1920 by 1200 WUXGA 15 inch widescreens for laptops - are made out of subpixels that're around fifty-six thousand nanometres wide, I think you can see SED's potential.

So take heart, fellow screen-starers. With super-contrast screens for our projectors, and SED monitors that shouldn't break a sweat displaying 6400 by 4800 (that's about print resolution on a 20 inch screen), the future looks not just bright, but also smooth, and contrasty.

This looks like a great technology breakthrough for CRT displays. I hope we see monitors in the next year.

I wouldn't mind, but I'm actually quite happy with my Dell 2005fpw. I don't need a screen that is too huge as a computer monitor, and my 47" CRT Projection HDTV is serving me fine as my television 😉 .

But yeah, once SED matures and becomes an affordable alternative to LCD, etc, it will be very attractive.

This isn't a new topic here at the forums, the problem though is when they will come out. I can't wait for them either. Watch when they release all these problems occur.

Im anxious, but not gonna hold my breath. Lord knows what the initial cost will be and if and when they will actually come along with the ALWAYS present new technology problems and glitches. I'll keep happily enjoying my 2405.
