Hi, a few weeks ago I got one of those System Security viruses that have been running around recently – I’m not sure of the exact name, but it was most likely a recent version. I used rkill.exe and Malwarebytes to remove the virus, and my computer has been (apparently) virus-free since then – however, there are still some after-effects that I haven’t been able to solve.
For one, I can’t send or receive from my hotmail accounts with Windows Live Mail. I have a POP account in Outlook 2007 that works fine, but with Windows Live I get the following: “Unable to send or receive messages for the (Windows Live ID) account. Sorry, we were unable to sign you into Windows Live ID at this time. Please try again later. Windows Live Mail Error ID 0x80048820”
Secondly, my Yahoo Widgets can’t connect to the internet: “No data available”/”Unable to connect”
Lastly, my MagicJack cannot connect, and has no dial tone: “Not connected, No 911 info available”/”Please connect to the Internet and double click here”
All three of these worked fine before the virus, so I’m almost positive that was the cause. Here’s what I tried to remedy the problem:
Ran MalwareBytes again, removed all infections. Ran AVG full scan, removed all infections. Ran RegCleaner, removed all problems with registry. System Restored to 1 month ago, System Restore said there were no changes made to my computer. Checked Windows Firewall to make sure none of the programs were being blocked (I have no other firewalls). Checked my host file, and there were no added entries.
Note that I have no problems browsing the internet with Firefox, and no other programs have had any trouble connecting. I’m not well-versed in networking issues, but it seems to me like the virus blocked or reset some ports that my programs used to connect to the internet. If this is the problem, how would I solve it? Or, if that’s not the problem, what is?
Thanks for any and all help on this issue!
