Security Settings won't let me open a CD

I have a CD that has some zip files that I need and windows won't let me open it saying my security settings won't allow it.

Help?!

Change your Security Settings. (Tools, Internet Options, Security.) Temporarily lower them.

Are you on a company LAN or a domain? If so, then it may be disabled by your IT department . . . in which case you will need to go to them. They should be able to check the contents of your ZIP files and if they are appropriate for download to your system then they can share them from the server.

The Intnetnet Options deal didn't work. It will only let me lower the setting to "medium" since that's the lowest option.

I'm just using my lappy here at home, so not at work. 🙂

Any other guesses?

OK - then go to Custom Level and play with specific eneable/disable choices. Focus on the green check - "Trusted" area. That is where your CD drive would be. If nothing works there, consider installing a free other than Windows Firewall such as Kerio or Zone Alarm that allows you to green light anything in the trusted zone.

Can you copy the CD in safe mode?

Good morning,

I think Corky probably has you pointed in the next logical direction in that it is a firewall problem. A quick and dirty way to test this theory is to unplug your Internet connection and then turn off whatever firewall you have.

To answer your specific question . . . yes, you have CD access from Safe Mode in XP and later.

I really doubt it's a firewall (I haven't used one yet that interfere's with hardware). More than likely, your user account doesn't have the right 'user rights' assigned to it. (If you are an administator it should by default allow you to access cd's)

If you have XP pro, try Group Policy:

goto run, type "gpedit.msc" and press enter.
Navigate in left column to: Comp Config>Win Settings>Sec. Settings>Local Policies>Sec. Options
In the list of policies, make sure "Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access to..." is disabled.
