My daughter is using XP Home and may have a virus. She can't update her Trend Micro anti-virus patterns. When we try to go to the free online scan from "housecall" the program won't load. She gets "security settings prevent downloading activeX". We've been into Control Panel> Internet Options>Security >> and set both Internet and Internet local to the lowest settings . Also to Custom and enabled all the Active X settings for both Internet & Internet local. Did a restart after changing the settings; BUT STILL CAN'T get it to download. Same message about security settings. She did once get an error message reference to NET V1.1. ( something she didn't need to add from MS, but did) Does anyone know what else might be set to block Active X; and how does one get around this problem.

You should be able to download the updated virus patterns from here
If that doesn't work I'd try rebooting into Safe Mode with Networking and see if you can update in that mode. I've seen a virus or spyware prog that disabled most of my outbound internet traffic (HTTP requests, email, etc.) The reason why I'd boot into Safe Mode with Networking is to prevent any harmful programs from loading on startup, it should allow you to update you virus scanner, ad-aware, spybot, etc.

Thanks for the help... Did try safe mode; but not to access the net. Went there to get into System Restore. I will try the safe mode route to the net.
