I'm not sure if this is the right forum...

I have my parents using Windows 2000. They are currently under dial-up and I have them using Firefox. Is there a security issue if they are not using a firewall? I ask this because I was under the impression that most hijacks are through an always on connection. Also, is it advisable to leave Windows Update on all the time, so that it updates in the background?

Dial up or not, I'd still use some sort of firewall. Keep W2K patched, run a/v spyware removal, all that stuff.

Just becasue you're on a dialup does not mean you are not vulnerable.

I used a WatchGuard SOHO when I still had dial up, gave me great piece of mind.
