Im taking an information security class...because I dont know much other than some basics about IT security.

Each student has to do some presentations on security topics, nothing that would be considered common or well known (so basic wireless security, for example, would do me no good)

Can you guys suggest a few topics I might look into for these? Im not looking for hand holding so much as some ideas and concepts that I can find information on without too much headache and do a ~5 - 10 minute presentation on.

I'm pretty much at a loss on how to get started, as this is something that Ive never really gotten into.

Thanks

I'll throw some stuff out there and maybe you can do a quick google/wikipedia search on these to see if something looks interesting to you...

Encryption, VPNs, Physical Security, Two-Factor Authentication, Data Loss/Leakage Prevention, Social Engineering, Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems, Penetration Testing, Incident Handling, Log Management/SEIM

Seepy has thrown out some good recommendations, another thought would be to look at the SANS and OWASP top ten lists of key security vulnerabilities.

If you want something recent you could look at the new FFIEC guidance on authentication for internet banking.

I think you need to figure out how specific your topic needs to be, when you say you are taking an information security class some of the topics pointed out by SANS and OWASP may be too specific for an entry level infosec class.

You could always back into a more general topic from a specific vulnerability (e.g., OWASP's top 10 are related to application security, you could do a presentation on the importance of secure development).

Or another entirely different approach could be the importance of an information security program in organizations (e.g., one of those components would be information security awareness).
