Help with preventing infection. Just set up new machine.
1. Installed NAV
2. Installed 16 megs of critical updates to XP-H from MS. (took two hours)
3. Downloaded Zone Alarm.
4. Seems like something infected my machine before ZA was up; symptom is "messenger" tries hundreds of times( 483 -900 times) to access internet after each re-boot, usually on the hour, but not always. Activity was detected by viewing ZA log.
5. Scanned with NAV and Spybot, but came up empty.
6. Disabled messenger under "services" no difference. How do I find out what's doing this and how to I get rid of it. Also, what is the proper order for new system setup? Windows>AV>ZA>Update virus def>windows update? or something other?

This is in XP ?

If so, it sounds like windows messenger trying to connect.

You could try what I just listed in this thread to remove it and see if that stops the alarms.
