security light on 03 GMC Envoy...

Spoooon

Lifer
Okay, the security light on the dash lights up on occasion (like every 5 or 6 months) while driving. Also, the passkey system prevents me from starting the car every now and then (5 times since I've owned the car, this morning being the 5th). I got the car brand new 5 or so years ago.

I've taken it in before to be serviced and the usual response is "if we can't duplicate it, we can't fix it." The last time I took it in (a year ago), they claimed it was a problem with the ignition switch. Obviously, it didn't fix it.

So, I've looked around on google, and have seen a couple sites with threads talking about the passkey modules being flaky. And I noticed that with remote start, they install a bypass module to get past the security in place.

I called the dealership and they guy quoted me $300 to replace the passkey module if it is faulty. I'm not sure if independent shops will do this sort of work, but I plan on calling a couple places later today.

I looked online, and remote start systems are approximately the same price or less with a bypass module.

So, should I try taking it in to see if I can get the problem fixed or do you think that I can bypass it altogether with a remote start system?

I'd start documenting when the issue occurs and checking into your state's lemon laws. The car failing to start is a serious issue.

Take a digital picture of the security light when it comes on.

When it refuses to start, videotape the fact that the security light is on and it won't start.

It also helps to find another dealership. I had a problem with my AC going off and on randomly. I captured it on video one day and showed it to my nearest dealer. They saw it and said it couldn't be duplicated so they didn't fix it. Took it to another dealer and show them the video and they replaced the entire climate control module. Maybe they've seen it before and know what it takes to replace it or maybe they're just nicer. I don't know but I'll never go to my local dealer again.
