A security guard at a Tulsa high school shot and wounded a 15-year-old student Thursday, police said.

Shortly before 3 p.m., as classes were letting out for the day, the student and the guard crossed paths and, after a discussion, the boy reached for his pocket. Thinking the boy was planning to pull a gun, the guard pulled his own weapon and fired. The round missed the student, ricocheted off the pavement and struck another boy in his pocket, which contained a cell phone. Shrapnel from the phone flew into the boy's face, causing a superficial wound in his cheek. The boy was taken to a hospital.

Ok, so the security guard not only shoots an unarmed kid, but he SHOOTS THE WRONG UNARMED KID?

-1,000,000 grasshopper points to stupid security guard

Sigh, this guy should be smacked upside the head by every parent in that school.

They all carry mace around here. Why on earth would they ever need real guns...they should carry guns w/ rubber bullets at most.

At my old high school they have a uniformed police officer on duty. After the incident where a student pulled a gun on a pregnant teacher I think it's been upped to about 5.

Oh and that's crazy

Yea... There is a simple one word reason for that...

Columbine

Sad, but kids bring guns to school, guards must be able to return fire. That being said, they should also be required to actually SEE a gun before pulling their own!!!!

You are second guessing this guy's decision based on...practically no facts? If he had to wait until he SAW the gun he'd be dead if there was one.

And you're basing your decision on...what?

Student Jake Oates told a reporter he saw the security guard tell the student to get off school property.

"He didn't get off at first," Oates said. When the security guard then pulled his gun on the student, "he was like, 'Are you going to shoot me?' and started walking across the street," Oates said.

At that, "The officer just shot, and he hit another little dude in the face that was over at the store. He just shot into a big old crowd," Oates said.

He shot at him in the back. Yea I'm sure that was justified.

Rules of engagement... (they apply for both police officers and civilians)

You're not allowed to shoot someone who you just "think" has a gun. You need to see it before you can fire. The person either must have already assulted you, or pulled a deadly weapon (gun, knife, club, etc.)

Grasshopper <--- has a concealed carry permit, knows the laws, would NEVER have even pulled his gun in this case, much less fired...

And a witness has NEVER lied or been mistaken. I'll wait until the investigation is over, thank you.

Ok, we're putting firearms in the hands of a rent a cop in a high school.

A high school where I'm fairly confident 5 guys from the drunken jockocracy can rush the rent a cop and take said firearm without breaking a sweat.

Nice.

So what, are YOU the security guard? Why are you defending some a$$wipe who shot a kid who might have been reaching for his cell phone and missed, which then hit a totally innocent kid? Its people like you who ruin the concealed weapon law because you think just because you're a bad@$$ that you have a gun that you can shoot anyone who reaches into their pocket.

Ok, school guards are probably at least one step below a cop. Are cops allowed to open fire cuz they think someone is reaching for a gun? Don't they have to actually see the gun first?

As CNN reports...
Thinking the boy was planning to pull a gun, the guard pulled his own weapon and fired, Allen said.
So the school guard drew his weapon and fired before the kid had his hand out of his pocket. So he could never have seen the gun.
Yeah I'm sure the guard was on edge cuz the kid threatened to kill him already but he shouldn't have fired. I wouldn't disagree with him if he pulled his weapon and made the kid freeze till he patted him down or something, but there was no justification for him to fire.

Overall, your average cop has terrible marksmanship, even under ideal conditions.

To keep the kids from killing each other and the teachers...
