I was offered a job in a hospital and now they are doing a security clearance and I am wondering what that entails. Are they looking in my background for financial issues and/or mental health issues, etc.?

Background check or security clearance? Which department is the clearance for?

Most places I've worked only just check to see if you have a criminal record. Not sure about a hospital. I assume it's a bit more rigorous.

What kind of position is it? If you work with medical records, they may just be covering extra bases for HIPPA and making sure you're not going to leak patient data. If they service particular folks that work for the federal government or celebrities, they may want even more security.

He said security clearance though. Ie, DoD or DoE type clearances, which generally are only done on people who will be working on military contracts...Not in a hospital.

OP you sure this is a security clearance and not just a more detailed background check?

Depends on the level of security clearance. The lowest levels just do a credit and background check to make sure that you're not a criminal. Make sure you read up on HIPAA and handling of ePHI data; you have to be extra careful around any kind of patient data and they basically want to make sure that:
A) you're not a criminal
B) you're not going to try and steal patient data to perform scams with
