I would need to set up a nice security camera system for a small business. It's in a very small area, but wiring it seems to be a pain. To get it professionally install we get quotes for like $3000, and I think thats a bit ridiculous.

What we would like to do is set it up and have it so that we can also view it at home. How much will a nice camera system be? Would it be possible to do it myself, any good wireless sytems available?

Any recommendations? 300 a piece + what other equipment would I need to buy?

It's still cheaper than two for $3000 :).

It really depends on what you want to do but i would suggest dvr or a pc dvr (most dvrs allow u to view the video over the internet) to record the video.
Also i suggest this forum http://www.cctvforum.com/ theses guys have helped me alot and most are in the cctv business.

we just spent 11K on upgrading our camera system. we upgraded from a old VHS tape system to a really nice DVR system and added 3 more cameras in the building for a total of 8.

3K isnt that much and seems about right to have somebody come out and do the install and the hardware cost. the DVR we got was 8K alone.

Not sure about brands, but some wireless cameras are webcams as well.. They can be setup with an ip address using your existing Wireless network...then you simply create a webpage that embeds all your feeds from your cameras. Works great unless the burglars bring their microwave with them.

for the wireless cameras, is there a networking protocol available that allows Security
(with a capital "S" ) ?

a friend recently had their business broken into, and now they are on the hunt for
"security stuff" - surveillance cams, etc.

there is some logic to having the computer to which the cameras are attached
"off-site" - like, the office next door, or across the street.

However, who wants their private data to be surveilled by complete strangers ?

is there a way to implement a wireless camera that is Secure ? that is, not accessible
by somebody in a van sitting outside the business.

and, preferably, Windows XP SP2 compatible.
