Not sure if I'm posting this in the right forum.

Anyways, I would like to set up a security camera in my room. I have roommates and we have friends over often. I trust 90% of them, but worry about something going missing. Also a possible robbery, as our house did get broken into once, but luckily they didn't go into my room.

I don't want anything web based, or even that puts the data over my network because of nsa/tinfoil hat concerns.

What I would like to set up is something that is easy to hide, and is running 24/7 that turns on when motion is detected (or I could just have it running all the time and have a huge hard drive that rewrites over old footage after a huge amount of footage).

I don't even know where to start looking into this kind of thing. I was thinking maybe a raspberry pi-like solution.

Ideally, Id like a easily hide-able camera, maybe a attached 2 TB hard drive that is also hidden, or bolted down so the thief would not be able to take the evidence if he did find the camera.

Lemme know what you guys think.

Sounds like a standard coaxial camera is needed that records to a DVR appliance. You could buy the DVR on eBay or Amazon and buy all kinds of different cameras on eBay or Amazon that look like every thing from clock radios to coat hangers. Those most likely will be wireless, but it's not WIFI. It will be between the RF frequency of 1.8-2.4 GHz. Since most people think cameras are using WIFI, that is the typical attack vector. Most won't suspect an analog signal riding on a normal non-WIFI frequency.

Would it be better not to use wireless at all? I was thinking of a wired camera - but that has a 10ft usb cable to an external unit that I would have in a place that could not be accessed without tools.

You could, but to hide it and everything is a PITA. Having to run cable is a a pain.
