Security against Code Red II Worm causes slower web browsing through cable modems

IE 5.5 Sp2 takes too long to go to and render the pages. Anywhere from 4-30 seconds. I have a fast cable modem. I checked the bandwidth out and that's fine. Some links that I click on, I need to click on twice before the "IE throbber" registers that iis responding to my request. I don't think it's my mouse either. When I click, I hear the mouse click sound from Windows @K.

Any thoughts...

I have a an Iwill KK 266-R w/ 1 GHz AMD 266 Thunderbird: Not Overclocked. I freshly installed Win 2K last night and everything was fine... I was making Windows and other driver updates etc... Then I began to notice this problem...

I called up my cable modem service provider up. I told him that bandwidth tests give me normal performance; yet web pages etc load up much slower. I also tried the cable modem on a different computer to ensure that it wasn't the computer. I also noticed that the cable modem was flashinf lights even when the computer was not powered on.

According to their tech support, this is due to the security precaution taken to combat Code Red. Apparently the provided is using the modem to detect whether the suscriber at the other end is running a Win 2K server. It really didn't make much sense to me.. but much of what he said seemed to coincide with what I had observed but hadn't told him.

Anyone else with similiar problems...?

It's a latency problem, and many others are having the same problems. The ISPs seem to be blaming the Code Red Worm's guzzling up the bandwidth. It seems logical, and ISPs are taking steps to alleviate the problem (such as blocking incoming port 80 requests). I don't know where they got the idea that scanning for Win2k servers causes latency problems, but it is ultimately the Code Red Worm's fault.
