Securing speakers on speaker stands

Well I just put together my metal speaker stands and pretty much just plopped my bookshelves on top. The stands came with spikes to put on the top plate, but I'm hesitant to use those cuz it might damage the finish of the speakers. Does anyone have any recommendations as to how to secure the speaker to the stand? Granted, I doubt the speakers will ever fall off due to vibration, but I am worried that someone might tip over one of the stands. I read somewhere that a specific type of tape that doesn't damage the finish and can easily come off the wood exists, but I don't know which tape this is.

I used a mini-tripod and a chopstick to mount my two fronts on my light and monitor, respectively. YMMV.

there's some poster-mounting goo/sticky stuff that you can buy - check out avsforum.com or hometheaterforum.com for more tips.

One guy on hometheaterforum.com said he uses round cork, like the kind normally used to protect the floor from furniture legs.
