securing Mac on public network

I'm on a public LAN in my hotel and I'm surprised to see many iTunes libraries on share without password. A quick look at my own prefs shows that my library was on share without pw as well! 😱 I quickly disabled sharing in iTunes.

In the Finder side panel under Shared I also see many MacBooks. How do I make sure my MBP does not appear there to others? I've already disabled File Sharing...

what else can and should I do to ensure my Mac is secure on a public network?

I usually just turn off sharing and discovery mode. Both located under System Preferences -> Sharing. Also make sure the firewall is on under System Preferences -> Security -> Firewall.

Those are the two main things, they are quick and easy to toggle on and off, and are better than nothing at all. Of course anyone with skills could still compromise you, but at least its not as simple as just going to thier finder and doubleclicking your computer anymore.
