Secure without signal loss

Ok, I've got a WRT54G running upstairs in my apartment, and I am running Satori v.4 from Sveasoft for the hardware with it bumped up to 70 mW.

Here is the problem, I have a laptop that is typically used in the back bedroom downstairs, and the wireless AP is in the front room Upstairs.

I get reception when there is no security settings on, but the moment I put any type of security setting on, I drop signal strength and can't hold a connection...any thoughts? The wireless card is also a Lynksys G card.

So, I need a security setting that won't decrease signal strength,

Thnanks for ht ehlep!

Get a booster antenna, at least a 6 or 8DB, the high the better. Unless your house is concrete, it should give you a nice signal pretty much anywhere, and you can keep your security intact.

MAC addresses are easy to spoof, WPA is regarded as the more secure of the wireless encryptions. You could install another WAP creating a chain/bridge to extend your range. Example, router is upstairs, so install another WAP downstairs where it still maintains a good signal to the router. Then try and bounce your laptop/bad connection off of the new WAP. I still think a strong booster antenna would be your best option, but knock yourself out.

Got ya, so you really think the only option is to put out a range extender? I am keen to the antenna idea, but you put a link up for a range extener, and I wasn't so keen to drop another $60 to $80, when my WRT54G only cost me $40!! 😛 That would seem silly to me. Does WPA weaken the signal?

Thanks for your help by the way!

hmmmmm, so basically, I need to set up another piece of equipment in the house!! 🙁 I was hoping ot avoid that....so goes it...thans for all o fyour help!

Any of the wireless encryption methods will reduce the strength of a signal because the data is scrambled before it is sent from the router to computer or vise versa. Welcome.
