Secure Wipe on external drive?

So I've use DBAN many times to wipe machines b booting from the disk and letting it do its thing. Is there a comparable type program to run on an external drive?

Need to be the official DOD approved Secure Wipe since we have some drives that used to contain production data on them at work.

These will be used again in regular computers. I found out I can connect them via a USB thing and then boot to DBAN and that will detect the USB drives so I'm doing it that way for now. Looks to take a very long time though...

Yeah - it takes time. It has to write zeros over the entire drive three times. The bigger the drive, the longer it takes. It is sometimes a good overnight job. 🙂
