I'm looking to sign up for usenet.com, and they recommend this secure-tunnel service for privacy. The secure tunnel website is actually promoting their service for all internet surfing. It basically works by establishing an SSH session between your PC and the secure-tunnel proxy server, and then decrypts traffic from there to wherever you want to go. The idea being that your ISP can't track your internet surfing, so when the Patriot Act looks to put the smackdown it's very limited. Although it seems like they could subpeona Secure Tunnel's records if they wanted to, so I'm a little confused about what this service actually gets you in terms of privacy.
Sounds good in theory, but does anybody know about how responsive their service is? If I'm having to go through their proxy, then any issues they're having internally will mess this up. Also if I'm downloading files (freeware and itunes music store of course) will this noticeably affect my download speeds?
Just curious. Thanks
