I'm looking for software that will remove all traces of data within a directory on a server. Does anyone know of something (preferably free) that will do this?
If you're talking about Windows I believe the cipher command will overwrite all freespace on a volume several times for you. If it's Linux you'll probably have to create a file large enough to fill the free space manually ('cat /dev/urandom > filename' will probably do) several times.
Its a company data server that is in use pretty much all day. Will cipher run when the server is under load? Even if so I cant imagine its a good idea to do without taking the server offline.
