Secure online storage suggestions?

Got this email from a relative but I know nothing about online storage and said I'd therefore ask forum experts. That means you guys.

I'm looking for an online data storage site. I need it for an organization whose Executive Council changes every 3 years. We need a place to storage confidential information so that there is continuity across the years despite the change in the Exec membership. The types of data we will be storing are mostly document files, a few pictures. I'm looking for a storage site that is free of charge, confidential, reliable, and that will use a password that can be changed easily.

I am also wondering about how we could back up the data on another online data storage site, in case the first one develops problem and we are not able to access the data. Data backup is an important issue for us.

I consulted with someone who directed me to Microsoft Skydrive at skydrive.live.com, which has the option of sharing certain files with other accounts or public access to certain files. Does anyone have experience with Skydrive and can provide me with their impression of it? Are there other storage sites that might be more appropriate for my needs?

Thanks for any info you can find for me.

Thanks in advance for your input, folks. 🙂

Skydrive is one option that meets your requirements. Note, though, that last time I checked Skydrive does NOT support folders. Everything has to be dumped in a single folder.

If you want to use any online storage service for sensitive data, you MUST encrypt the data before uploading it. Otherwise, there is no security, because the password that you use for the upload is known by the storage service, and you are at the mercy of both their security and their trustworthiness.

I've been using Skydrive for a year or so, and they've always had everything organized into folders. The maximum file size is 50MB for each file, so you should be fine there.

I just checked my old Skydrive account and, yeah, I see the "Create Folders" option. Come to think of it, maybe the problem was that you couldn't (and apparently still can't) upload entire folders (folders/subfolders/etc.). You can .RAR them or like, but then you're faced with the 50MB per file limit.

Anyway, at the time (and still) the usefulness of Skydrive seemed to be very dependent on how complex your folder structure was.

I would setup a dedicated server and make a true-crypt partition and store it all on there via SFTP. Can also be automated too. Probably more expensive though...
