Secret of Mana coming in February.

The voices sound awful, but otherwise the game seems fine.

Square also has their own download service, so if you dont like Steam you have other options.

I'll check it out, but I don't think Secret of Mana really needed a 3D remake. Not unless it was going to look like a modern 3D game, at least.

how is the multi player tho?

that was the whole point and fun in that game, otherwise chrono trigger was a better game story / plot wise.

But i remember busting out the multi tap on my SNES and plugging 2 extra controllers on it and having a 3 player carnage on it.

I loved the game at the time, but it was too repetative to go through again. I agree I think this is an odd choice for a 3D remake.

Has anything been changed or is it a straight 3D remake? If nothing has changed (I'm also curious about the multiplayer), then I'd rather just play it on my SNES.

After the way they ruined the Final Fantasy remakes on PC, I'm not holding out hope. What they did to Final Fantasy 6 was a crime. If they do it to ChronoTrigger I might lose my mind.

That too would be nice. But EA bought out Bullfrog and then crushed it. They havent made games of many franchises they own. They just sit on the copyrights doing nothing. They killed off Dungeon Keeper as well.

I know it's pretty ridiculous how many game companies they've ruined. Maxis comes to mind too. I think they own the original Alpha Centauri license as well.

Yeah, I'm not so sure about the 3D decision on this remake. Given that the 3D quality looks like it is something out of 1990's (just with higher resolution), I feel it would have been much better with upscaled 2D sprites. I get why they didn't want to do that, since animating sprites requires a lot more work than a 3D model, but this really looks like something that should have been aborted.

I can only hope that they kept the core game mechanics/engine/item database/(maybe drop rates), as the original game. You could in the original gain weapon orb upgrades past the documented 8 with random drops in a specific area (don't think you can go past level 9).

OK, graphics are absolutely lovely. Looks much better than Final Fantasy 3 and 4.
New sound is really nice and the new music is good, but you also have the option to play the original SNES music.

Controls are excellent, the UI ring is even better than before. You can toggle hotkeys for any item you want. combat is fluid and fun. Theres voices for just about everyone, but the Narrator sounds the best overall.

You can enable and disable a minimap at any time. There is also a quest log and a full map available right at the very beginning.

The intro video looks good. You can skip any cutscene any time. Overall this is a win.
One thing: You may recall other Square games for Windows had a cheat option. This one does not. Not a huge deal but some people like it when getting thru annoyingly tough areas.

OH, it still has the classic console saves. Thats the only downside.

Its funny how$ 39.99 seems so pricey when the original was something like $55 25 years ago. Reviews report a lot of bugs, so may wait on this one.

excellent? by who. I see many negative reviews regarding the camera, clunky combat and bugs...and why oh why would you not put in online coop on THIS game....sounds like a phone remake that got a sloppy pc port. This can't have been a quick game to remake like this..you'd think they'd go all out.

Well the original still goes for around $50 (used, cart only)... You will see some cheaper, but those are almost always a reproduction. If you want a complete in box, (still used though), be prepaired to pay $120-150. If you want a factory sealed new, you are going to fork out $900-1,200.

I don't see very many excellent reviews. I see a lot of negative reviews and after watching a stream of the game, I won't be buying this ever. The look looked and played like a bad fan-made port.

I had the same thought about that other recent Square-Enix release Lost Sphere. (It was developed by their subsidiary, Tokyo RPG Factory.) The game costs $50, and it looks a lot like this Secret of Mana release. If I remember correctly, Tokyo RPG Factory's previous release, I Am Setsuna released for $40, and it looks as good if not better than Lost Sphere. Honestly, it just seems like I could spend the $50 on a different game and probably get more value out of it. For example, Assassin's Creed Origins was $60 at launch, and I've spent over 70 hours in that game.

Likely, a lot of the pricing has to come from an expected level of sales. Assassin's Creed will sell at least a million at release, but according to Wikipedia, I Am Setsuna only sold around 60k at release on the PS4 and Vita (no PC stats available). I remember when I Am Setuna came out, and I heard that it had combat that was reminiscent of Chrono Trigger. Of course, that got me interested in the game, but then I heard that the story and visuals were a bit bland. Also, what really creates the perfect RPG for me is the music. If I won't buy the soundtrack, it will never reach legendary status for me. (The same is true for movies too.)

They sold badly because they are not even remotely as good as the games they are trying to be - or anything recent either.

Well, I can't agree or disagree as I haven't played them yet. Although, I have heard some rather mixed remarks on I Am Setsuna. I mean... that's really the problem with trying to draw parallels with games that are considered greats (i.e. Chrono Trigger). You end up creating lofty expectations, and if you don't at least come close to them, you're probably doing more of a disservice.

If they gave this half as much love as the FFVII remake, could have had something special. With the likes of Ni No Kuni 2 on the horizon, this is just subpar. It's like they didn't even try, may as well had just ported the android version. They spread themselves too thin to incorporate the PS Vita.
