Help!!!

I just tried to install a second device (DVD Writer) as a slave device on my secondary IDE chain. With one device on the chain everything works as it should, but when you add a second device the boot process halts at the Windows logo screen. I checked the event viewer and found the following:

Event Type: Error

PC is using a DFI LanParty UT 250b NF3 with a AMD 64 processor (2800), Xtasy 9600XT, 1 gb ram, Windows XP Home SP2, and 450w power supply. If there is only one device on the secondary, it boots normally but with two devices (I've tried both a DVD rom, a CD writer and the new DVD writer)...boot failure. I've replaced the cables, checked the master/slave pin settings and tried different positions on the cable all with the same results. The primary IDE is fine and has two standard IDE hard drives attached and working.

Any and all help gratefully accepted!!!

Check the jumpers on both devices...if you have a WD HD then you must add a jumper to enable it as a Master with Slave + some DVD Writers prefer the Master settings...

Hi LED,

Thanks for the try, but I already did that. The problem is on the secondary IDE not the primary IDE. I have tried three different devices on the chain in various configurations. DVD Writer as master on the end of the chain and CD Writer as slave on the center connector, both device swapped on the ribbon, then changed pin settings and went through the whole routine again. Tried it with a writer and a basic DVD reader in combination and the same problem exists.

Ralphw...Is the IDE cable connected properly? The blue or colored end goes to the Mobo while the Black plugs to the device...

Absolutely...all connections are correct. I'm at my wits end here. If I remove power from the slave device then the PC boots normally. If I reconnect power then it fails to boot at all (including safe mode). The secondary channel is working fine as long it only has 1 device connected. Strangely, the bios sees both devices and identifies them correctly so it doesn't appear to be a problem there. I have the latest NForce drivers (Ver 5.10). The problem appears to be when the nvatabus.sys loads. I don't have a clue how to resolve this at this point.....arrrgh!!!

After ou try Ioo's suggestion then state what type of 450wt PSU you are using...you might be able to check if that is the problem or if the ports is bad bt switching the HD to 2ndary

Thanks for the help folks.

Now, if I uninstall the Nvidia ATA drivers, then I assume I use the default drivers loaded by Winsdows, Correct? Any issues with doing that?? As for the power supply, it's an Antec and has been in service for a year or so with no issues. Multiple drives on the secondary worked fine prior to the upgrade to the Nforce based MB

Thanks Again,.

Problem solved thanks to the suggestion by Ioo. I removed the Nvidia IDE drivers and used the Windows native drivers and thats all it took. Now that I've been looking I see a bunch of posts re. some of the Nvidia NForce drivers. Anyway, thanks for the help!!
