Secondary IDE devices not recognized

Well my VC fried during a startup and after dropping in a different VC, I finally got everything up except that my secondary IDE devices (a DVD and a CD burner) were not recognized, and my LAN connection did not work. I simply moved the LAN connection to the other slot (my MB has 2 onboard LAN's) and it worked fine.
So first I tried a new IDE cable with no luck. I then tried a CD-ROM form my other computer and not recognized, I took my DVD burner and put it into my other computer and it worked fine and I even sucessfully burned a couple of CD's.

At this point I figure I need to RMA the MB.
Well I got it back yesterday and installed everything and I have the EXACT same problem. No secondary IDE devices and only one LAN connection works. The MB i received as replacement has a diferent S/N sticker, so I'm guessing it is a different one.

Is it possible they returned me the same MB and changed the S/N sticker?
Or is this problem somehow caused by something else? If it was the PSU, I don't see how the primary IDE would work but just not the secondary.

Anyone have ANY ideas?

Don't put hard drivers on the same chain as optical drives. Also don't use cable select. Manually set the appropriate jumper

I see you have 1 WD HD...if it was the lone Master it wouldn't have a jumper on it so you'd have to put one on set to Master with Slave

Yes, my HD is on the Primary IDE with no slave, and no jumper installed. It works with no issues.
I have an NEC 3520A as the master and a 36X CD burner as the slave connected to the secondary IDE. The jumpers are correct. Everything worked until my VC fried. It now just doesn't recognize anything connected to the secondary IDE slot on the MB.
The computer boots, surfs the net and can even play games that are on the HD. But I can't use either CD-ROM. So no playing games that need the CD, and no burning any CD's or DVD's.

I'm just wondering if there could be a cause of this that is not due to the MB.

I hate to be dense, but what is a "VC?" As for the mobo, it is probably a refurb - possibly with the same problems. I would RMA this one and try a different model - if possible a different brand.

And, yes - the cause could be the cable you are using.

VC = Video Card

Have changed the cable and did not help.
I'm sure the board is a refurb, but I can't imagine it would have the exact same problem as this seems to be a very unusual issue. I'm thinking I may have recieved the same board though.

Interesting! Do you suppose that the problem is not the mobo, but the "VC?" Have you tried it with a different display adapter (DA)?

No, but I have used 2 different VC's (a 6800 GT and a Radeon 7200, both AGP).

The only thing I can think of left to try is a different PSU. But I just don't see how everything else would work if the PSU had a problem. And the burners have power, just won't be recognized.

This just isn't making any sense to me.

If yu have 2 optical drives switch them around or better yet only hook one up and see if both are still functional. With some optical drives they will work well with the Cable Select and sometimes Master/Slave wroks better.

I think we should just move everything to SATA and quit using EIDE drives. That way every drive can have its own connection.

I've never used cable select. Do both drives need to be using this if I have both connected?
I will try them indivually when I get home.

I have used only cable select for the past 6 years on IDE devices. That is necessitated by having them in mobile racks and interchangeable. That way I can move drives around and the Master Slave relationship is determined by position.

That way I don't have to change any of the drive jumpers inside of their rack trays. It has always worked perfectly for both HDDs and opticals.

Agree that the future is SATA with one drive per connector. We just need a lot more SATA ports on mobos as opposed to two.

Or 4. IMO 6-8 and move optical drives to SATA (I believe some already exist).
